Smoked Trout Pâté: Substitutions!

If you don’t have smoked trout on hand, try using 8 ounces of another fish. You can use leftover roasted salmon, trout, cod, or halibut. For a less-expensive and quicker-prep option, you could also use canned tuna or salmon. You can also customize the flavors to suit your preferences. Add a few more fresh herbs, or replace the horseradish with a more mild seasoning (such as dijon mustard or a dash of black peppercorn). The key is to experiment with flavors you love to find something absolutely delicious!

How can you Serve this Smoked Trout Pâté?

Try serving the smoked trout pâté in roasted protobello mushrooms, with a few socca crackers or vegetable crudités, or over a Grain-Free Waffle or a Rosemary Biscuit (Always Delicious pg. 203).

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Course Dips and Sauces
Cuisine American
Servings 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces Smoked Trout, chopped
  • cup sour cream, mayo, or Greek yogurt (for Dairy Free, use Basic Mayo, Lemon Aioli, or Dairy-Free Sour Cream)
  • 2-3 tbsp lemon juice, or more to taste
  • 1-2 tbsp prepared horseradish, or more, to taste
  • ¼ cup chopped scallions

Instructions

  • Stir ingredients together. Serve with crudités, in lettuce wraps, or on crackers. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Notes

Variations

  • Phase 1: Enjoy with Socca Crackers (Always Delicious pg. 202). Serve in lettuce wraps, on vegetable slices like cucumbers, or with vegetable sticks like carrots or celery.
  • Phase 2: Same as phase 1, or serve atop a bed of quinoa or brown rice with fresh vegetables.
  • Phase 3: Serve with slices of toasted rye bread or whole grain crackers.

Substitution Notes

  1. Substitute smoked salmon, or other types of smoked fish, canned sardines, kippered herring in place of the smoked trout.
  2. For a dairy-free variation, use our Basic Mayo (Always Delicious pg. 259), Lemon Aioli (Always Delicious pg. 298), or Dairy-Free Sour Cream (Always Delicious pg. 306). If making them fresh, reduce the salt in the sauces to account for the higher salt content in the smoked fish.
